The Tollesbury Singers were formed in 19?? to enjoy and promote the singing of well-known songs of all kinds. We now perform a wide range of choral and vocal music at our summer evening concerts, which in recent years have included medleys from shows such as The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Carousel, Mary Poppins, West Side Story and Les Miserables as well as individual items such as Bacarole, Radetsky March, Music of the Night, Wonderful World and even an ambitious arrangement of Scarborough Fair.
Our ever-popular Christmas evenings present a selection of new and old carols alongside audience participation in traditional carols and classic songs. Last year Britten's Deo Gracias provided an unusual but thrilling highlight, which encouraged the Singers to tackle the virtuosic This Little Babe, which is basically one melody sung at different times. During Easter Week there is usually a more reflective programme, which is part of the Singers' contribution to the community activities, and this has included performances of Messiah, The Crucifixion, Olivet to Calvary and seasonal anthems. Recently the musical director has introduced some more unusual items: Eric Thiman's The Last Supper and last year Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo. |
Our emphasis is on enjoyment, but also to sing to the best of our ability in order to entertain our audiences and make the concerts pleasurable and happy occasions. There is great satisfaction to be gained from working together to create an event that is greater than one's individual efforts and provides an emotional moment and sense of achievement.
Rehearsals take place in the Parish Rooms on Tuesday evenings at 8pm when singers of all ages and abilities meet to practise and socialise. It is not necessary to be able to read music, although it is a useful skill and over time many singers have developed an ability to follow the outline of the music. Newcomers or enquiring spirits are welcome to come along to join in and find out what it is about and what it is like. There is a subscription to cover running costs, but this does include the provision of all music, so there are no extra costs after you've paid the termly subscription. Those who are less sure of their vocal abilities are welcome to our concerts, which offer a happy antidote to an evening sitting in front of the television. |
